we've been hit by the bernal heights succulent thief! they took two beautiful succulents, one of which had grown to about 12 inches and turned a gorgeous red (may have been a sunburn actually). who steals plants anyways? and what are they doing with all these succulents?

we considered putting up a sign, but decided to just replace the abducted succulents with extra prickly cacti!

my favorite climate is 90 degrees with high humidity and some rain on the side. i know, i sometimes wonder why i life in san francisco too.

but when the sun came out from the clouds today i was sooo happy! hopefully it will dry up our newly stained retaining wall and bench and show no signs of damage. i can't remember the last time it rained for so many days in a row... and it just had to be the day after we stained. i have the worst luck.

thought i'd blog a post or two about sailing while our accidental jibe sailing blog is still on hiatus. it was a rough and stormy bay today... forecast showed chance of thunderstorms in the east bay. but we figured we'd give it a go anyhow.
we sailed half way between treasure island and angel island and decided to turn back. winds were gusting over 30 knots, and online sailing magazine latitude 38 described sailing that day as follows... "with a ripping ebb fueling a steep chop, the bay became a carnage factory, claiming gear and sails." it really didn't seem all that bad out, but it just wasn't very enjoyable for the guest crew.

after booking tickets to fly to mexico brian and i both realized that our passports had expired this year, as in already... ugh! alas, after a little google search and some helpful yelp reviews, we head to the san francisco passport agency. we tried making an appointment but the next available wasn't until september, and we fly in less than a week! but no need, we walked right in on a friday afternoon, got a number and within ten minutes we were called to the window. with all our documents in check (old passport, required paperwork, new passport photos, flight itinerary, and a check) the nice man told us we could pick up the new passports monday morning! awesome. now if only every government agency could run this friendly, smoothly, and efficiently.

half way through the year till my wintery birthday, fourth of july was always like the christmas of summer in indiana. days filled with swimming, eating, water skiing, and fireworks! temperature and humidity so high it would melt your red, white, & blue popsicle before you could finish eating it. it was the best of times.

although it's been amazingly warm here this weekend, i can barely keep my feet in the bay for more than a minute before it stings with cold. it dropped my body temperature about 10 degrees in about 30 seconds, or at least if felt that way.

we've been out and about this week showing my dad and sally around our new neighborhood, as well as taking them by some classic san francisco sights. fun times!

finally ate at the old clam house on bayshore blvd., san francisco's oldest restaurant built in 1861!

took them sailing to angel island for the day. saw this big old crane on the way out.

got stuck on treasure island headed home from sailing, but got some nice views during the wait.

walked up to my sister's house to visit, her yard is the best.

your 'to do' list seems to always be growing when you own a home. well, this week while my dad was in town we got a lot of those 'to do's', done!

sally took me fabric shopping, and i reupholstered our six dining room chairs! my right hand was sore for a week, but they look great!

my dad and brian built a shelving unit for the garage, nice work. then my dad and i managed to get everything organized and put away. we also hung my new 80lb punching bag, and made a little workout area. i'm pretty excited about the punching bag.

i used to love my ups delivery man, always friendly and happy to chat. since moving to bernal heights they've become a nightmare! so far they've left 4 packages on the sidewalk in front of the house. luckily i've come home shortly after delivery, so only 1 out of the 4 boxes have been stolen. does the driver not realize how stupid it is to leave a box unattended on the sidewalks of san francisco?
after the first call to ups asking them to please stop leaving boxes outside on the sidewalk the driver decided to get clever, and threw the box on the small second story balcony. the balcony is about one foot wide with 1964 glass doors behind it. the box was small to medium sized and fairly heavy, getting to my point they are lucky that the box didn't break the glass door!
after the second call to ups asking them to again, please stop leaving boxes outside on the sidewalk the driver decided to leave two boxes outside at the same time. maybe they thought one would protect the other from theft.

this is really ridiculous. ups PLEASE STOP leaving boxes on the sidewalk when the customer isn't home!

after tweeting about my frustration someone contacted me and assured me that it would never happen again. and so far, it hasn't.

after demolishing the backyard jungle in jean shorts and flip flops i found out the unfortunate way that there's poison oak growing back there!

my legs and feet are covered, and in agony. luckily it was a warm sunny day so i had long sleeves on to cover my tattoo's and wore gloves since i was shoveling. but my legs and feet were not so lucky. so far the spreading has remained on the leg and feet area, and i'm crossing my fingers it will all heal up before making it's way anywhere else! it's my first encounter with poison oak, and i hope it is the last! it itches so badly i want to scream and cry all the time.

my number one recommendation if you are suffering from poison oak... ice packs! the stinging from the cold cancels out the itching sensation.

as most of you already know i'm a huge movie fan. so when i recently came across these awesome prints of directors from retrowhale, i knew i had to have them! they come mounted on wood and are ready to hang.... and i love them! she had quite a collection of directors to choose from already, but i actually was able to pick a few of my own favorites that weren't on the list. my 9 picks were, and as seen below... peter jackson, wes anderson, michel gondry, steven speilberg, alejandro gonzález iñárritu, john hughes, sofia coppola, danny boyle, and the coen brothers.

painting walls

sucks. i thought painting a few walls sounded like a pretty easy job, even fun maybe. i mean i painted my old apartment bathroom pink, so i was already a pro! boy was i so wrong. choosing colors is difficult. i was a color major, so i thought this would be the easiest part! but maybe it's being a color major which is making this that much more difficult. i'm looking for just the right color and shade, but i'm just not getting it.

after days and hours of contemplating color options, then a couple more hours of taping up all the walls so the paint would come out perfectly, (i'm a bit of a perfectionist so this probably took me way longer than it should have) i was ready to prime and paint! several more hours later it was done... and it was awful. it was way to dark and almost unnatural looking, in a bad way.

the next morning we buy three more colors and i start to prime... again. here's where my painting headache turned into a disaster. apparently you can't just prime over just any paint! who knew? not me! if paint has any kind of sheen to it, you must first sand the walls so that the primer can bond with the paint or wall. so every time i rolled over with the primer it would clump up like cottage cheese on my roller! i had a complete paint meltdown. here i was, sitting in the middle of the dining room on plastic wrap covered in paint balling my eyes out. (mind you i was half delirious already from lack of sleep and the 12 hours of paint fumes from the previous day.)

what primer looks like when it's not bonding with the paint on the walls. ugh

i called my dad, the builder. he assured me it was nothing to cry about (did i also mention he's a marine?) and that whatever i had done wrong could indeed be fixed! fixed, really? okay, how? he told me to hire someone who knew what they were doing. although my inflated do-it-myself ego was crushed, i knew he was right. so the very next day we got a guy in to have a look and give us an estimate. to my surprise it was much more affordable than i thought. now if i could only pick out the right color!

on the way to the christening party of the new and improved ffdg, we stopped by lowes on bayshore blvd to pick up a 'gallery warming' gift (a red headed irish man cactus, awesome). and when we came out this bmw (see below) was parked right next to my jeep! what are the chances? if you've ever been to lowes on bayshore, (which is a weird enough location to start) the parking lot is huge. so not only did they park right next to me when there were about a 100 other places to park, but on the very same night we were buying a gift and headed to the gallery! so weird. and what were they doing at lowes on a friday night i wonder? home improvement project, weekend gardening project, leaky faucet... who drives this mystery bmw with the ffdg sticker on the back??

83rd annual academy awards

i finally watched all ten academy awards 'best picture' nominations. all good films (some great), but 'best picture'.... really? below is my rank for 'best picture'. number one being who i think should win, down to my lesser favorite, number ten.

my top six 'best picture' picks are all brilliant films, and i can't wait to watch them all a second, and third time! but i do have to say expanding to ten picture nominations i'm not sure was the best idea for the oscars. last year maybe i'd agree there were ten deserving nominations, but i think in the long run it might be a hard number to reach every year.

i'm not sure what all the hype over 'social network' is all about. i did think it was a really good, entertaining movie, but i don't see why it's great.

brian got me the new verizon iphone as my belated bday gift and i love it! it arrived on monday, and today (five days later) it took a lavender bubble bath. *tear

in the middle of my already hectic morning of frantically packing and trying to stay warm on one of the coldest san francisco weekends of the year, gizmo decided to pee in his cat carrier on the way home from the vet. i ran a warm lavender bubble bath for gizmo and his carrier as soon as we got home, and by the time i had him all clean and smelling like lavender i was drenched, and freezing! (by the way... it's cat lavender bubble bath, safe for kitties!) so i threw my wet jeans over the top of the shower, but as i was throwing them i thought to myself why are these so heavy? well... as soon as i heard the loudest kurplunk i've ever heard in my life coming from the bathtub, i turned and threw myself into the tub instantly remembering my new iphone in the back pocket of my jeans. ugh! i reach for my new iphone, now drowning in 5 inch deep lavender bubble bath and pull it out.
i panic. i try to text, and make a call but my phone freaks out! i take one last picture (below) and turn it off.

after seeking advice on facebook from friends i grab the vacuum and start sucking the water from all it's openings. it seems to be working, but i know there's still more in there! i pour a ziplock bag full of rice and drop up my new iphone in, then make an appointment at the genius bar.

i arrive at the genius bar later that night, hand the guy my bag of rice (and brand new iphone), and tell him i dropped it in water. i don't know if it was because i looked like i could start crying at any moment, my pathetic attempt at absorbing up all the water in a bag of rice, or that i told him the truth, but he gave me a new one, and at no cost! i love you apple.

got the keys to the new place today... very scary and exciting all at the same time! i've become very attached to my little one bedroom apartment on duboce and pearl st. it's where i've called home for 8 years now with my three kitties. so with a tears in my eyes, i'm busy packing.

estate sale

for the last couple years, every day on my way to work i pass by st.joseph's village. it's a beautiful old church that i've wanted to get inside forever now. so i was excited to see the doors unchained and wide open for an estate sale this week.

unfortunately the old church was sold, and they are planning on making it into condos and retail space. the old man and woman i spoke with said the buyer claims to keep the church standing, and restore it to its original beauty, but i find it hard to believe. i would love to hear that that's what he does, but i can't figure how they'll make condos and retail space with the current construction.

headed back home today. i've never flown on my birthday, but with the time change and all it ends up adding a few hours to my birthday. so even more hours to think about how old i'm getting.... great.

today's my birthday. woke up in indiana and will be going to bed tonight at home, in san francisco.

so before we left for our flight sally and my dad made me cinnamon rolls for my birthday breakfast... yum!

so it's no surprise to most of you that i'm not a big football fan. i love baseball and basketball, but just can't seem to get into the extreme contact and constant stopping in football.

but.... brian's a huge football fan, huge, and my uncle larry has a suite at the new lucas oil stadium where the colts play. so we went to a game, and it was great seeing a lot of my extended family that i don't usually get to see, like my uncle larry.

the stadium itself was worth going to the game, it was pretty incredible!

and they win!

earthquake! in indiana?

yep, that's right we had an earthquake this morning in indiana. a 4.2, well later it was reported as a 3.8 magnitude from the usgs. just a little shake, but none the less an earthquake in indiana!

of course being in town from san francisco, 'quake capital' all my friends and family accused me of bringing it with me. i assured all of them that it was not me that brought the earthquake, but the fault line that runs through the midwest.

in case you all didn't know my dad's a builder. so went down to nashville, indiana today to see a cabin he's been building for the sasso family. it is amazing. here's just a peak, but it's still in progress... so more pictures to come when it's all completed.

flew back to indianapolis the day after christmas. it's my first time back in the wintertime and the first time i've seen snow in six years!

we got here just in time, because it all melted a few days later.

i may have over extended myself a bit this year, but i think the results were worth the effort! here is a small sampling of the christmas cookies i baked this year... lemon zest cut out cookies with powdered sugar, maple-walnut cookies, decorated sugar cookies, red velvet whoopie pies, and chai tea cookies. oh, and peanut butter buckeyes (not pictured).

to my surprise the day we brought the christmas tree home betty didn't seem too interested in it. but as we keep adding presents underneath, she seems to be getting more curious about the whole christmas tree thing.

sampson's seen quite a few christmas trees in her lifetime, but she still enjoys them. i remember when her and her two son's were still kittens they had quite a few fun times climbing up and down the christmas tree, breaking more than a few ornaments along the way. i guess betty is too sophisticated for that nonsense.
